Heating

Heat pumps use refrigerant for heat absorption, heat transportation, and heat release. This allows them to heat and chill your home with only one unit. Furnaces produce heat using fossil fuels. For example, natural gas or propane. Furnace handlers circulate hot and cool air from other HVAC units around your house, so it reaches each room at the temperature you desire.

Cooling

Your HVAC cooling unit pulls fresh air from outside to push through ductwork in various rooms throughout your building. This air is often filtered so that pollutants or other contaminants are not allowed into the rooms. Newer ventilation technologies have smaller footprints compared to traditional ducts. They can also be installed ductlessly with minimal renovation.

There are distinct differences in HVAC and air-conditioning, even though they are often used as synonyms. A complete HVAC unit offers full control over heating and cooling, while an AC only cools the space. HVAC systems can use boilers or heat pump powered by various sources of energy to heat a room. This warmth is then distributed using ductwork, or a central fan system.

Ventilation

Ventilation, the "V", in HVAC is what provides fresh air while extracting stale and polluted indoor air through gaps and cracked surfaces or mechanical devices such as ductwork.

Air conditioning cools by evaporating freon in an outdoor unit and blowing air inside through ductwork. This removes heat from the atmosphere and improves indoor air-quality by filtering out allergens, dust, smokes, odors, and VOCs.

Depending on the home design and climate, systems may use heat pumps or furnaces to operate. Some homes have both heat pumps as well a furnace to both absorb energy and transport it while also cooling the property. While other properties use only an air conditioner which cools by evaporating a freon gas like in refrigerators.

Thermostat

A thermostat is essential for controlling heating and air conditioning systems in any home. A thermostat, which is a low power device that automatically adjusts the temperature in a room, also filters the air by reducing the humidity and improving the indoor air quality.

Failing to replace or repair a thermostat can result in expensive repairs and replacements. For this reason, you should always seek professional help to assess a broken thermostat. This will prevent costly repairs and replacements in future.

Traditional thermostats are made of two metals bolted in a strip that acts as a connection to an electrical circuit. As heat enters the room, it causes the strip to bend. Once bent, current from the thermostat board flows to terminals Y/O and G, which then jumps over to terminal Y/O, signaling to the condenser that the building should be cooled.
