HVAC (Heating, ventilation and air conditioning) Systems

HVAC (heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning) systems are integral to homes and large buildings including hospitals, schools and data centers.

An HVAC system has six primary components. An HVAC program taught at a vocational school can teach students the functions and components of an HVAC system, as they also learn how to diagnose problems and repair them.

Air Conditioning

HVAC systems keep the air cool inside your home by exchanging warm and moist indoor with cooler and drier outdoor. This helps to avoid mold growth that can cause health concerns or structural damage.

Air conditioning systems can also be broken down into two separate components: cooling and heating. The cooling unit is located outside and uses blowers and fans to distribute cool air throughout the ductwork.

HVAC systems usually have heating components in the furnace. The thermostat will control when to switch from heating to cooling. Regular maintenance helps to keep HVAC systems running smoothly.

Furnace

Furnaces work by burning fuels (such as propane or gas) and dispersing the heat throughout your house via vents. These furnaces can be electric or gas, or they can be dual fuel systems that incorporate both.

Air conditioners are essential to any HVAC system because they absorb, transport and discharge heat. They circulate both cool and warm air throughout your home by using a motor with an evaporator and compressor.

Thermostat

A thermostat monitors, controls and maintains the temperature within a system's preset limits by sensing changes in temperature and taking appropriate measures. Most thermostats have the ability to be programmed.

Many models feature a small toggle or cycle to set your AC for cooling. You should move it or push it until a temperature appears on the screen that corresponds with your home's ambient temperatures.

Programmable thermometers are equipped to save money and energy by adjusting the temperature and "sleep” time. Other settings allow you set when and at what temperature you will leave during the weekdays to ensure your system does not run.

Evaporator Coil

The cooling power of any air conditioning system is provided by the evaporator. These copper coils, which are located in the indoor air handler/cooling unit, connect directly with the extremely cold freon flowing from its source. This helps to maintain the temperature of this unit.

The blower fan draws warm house air over an Evaporator coil. This absorbs it and then cools the Refrigerant. Water vapor is condensed around these coils and reduces humidity levels.

The evaporator coil will perform best when it is kept clean. When dust and gunk gather on it, the heat transfer is decreased, causing your system to consume more energy in order to meet the thermostat settings. It is important that both you and the HVAC provider create a plan of regular maintenance.

Ductwork

The network of tubes, or conduits, that are used by furnaces and air conditioners to distribute air to different parts of the home is called ductwork. When properly designed, ductwork will provide energy savings and comfort to the residents.

Ductwork are vents that can be installed in walls and ceilings. They allow air conditioning in living spaces. Most ductwork, which is usually made from rigid sheet-metal to maintain an ideal air temperature and limit restrictions on airflow, is constructed of rigid metal. It must be inspected regularly to check for any cracks or gaps that could reduce the benefits of conditioned indoor air. Due to the possibility of conditioned-air loss due to holes and cracks in ductwork, periodic duct cleanings are recommended. Other forms of ductwork can include take-offs to divert small parts of main ductflows to branch ducts.
